Steep but rewarding ascent
Short Summary created by Colin Murphy,  17 Feb 2014
Park at V528 872 A. Proceed up through a steep field alongside a stream for 100m, crossing a fence where you'll see a narrow rocky track. Turn left along track for a few hundred metres before ascending directly south via a steep heather-covered spur. The slope becomes less steep at about 400m altitude and the heather is replaced by short grass, which makes the going considerably easier. There are great views over Roads Lough and along the precipitous valley sides to the left. At point V533 862 B you will emerge into a broad, almost flat area between Kells Mountain and the East top. Turn left and walk 300m. The broad summit area rises fairly sharply for about 20m and is a a mixture of rock and grass. The summit is marked by a significant cairn. Time for ascent 1.5 hours. This is the last top(612) on the Knocknadober ridge heading North East and is an easy walk from Kells Mountain. Given that our car was parked on the coast road ( approx. V525 875 C) we descended via the north flank of the mountain on steep ground encountering serious amounts of heather and high ferns - enough to convince us that a descent from Kells Mountain would probably have been a better option.
