Summary
for Kells Mountain East Top (Sliabh na gCeall (mullach thoir)):
Steep but rewarding ascent
Summary created by Colin Murphy
17 Feb, 2014
Park at A (V528 872). Proceed up through a steep field alongside a stream for 100m, crossing a fence where you'll see a narrow rocky track. Turn left along track for a few hundred metres before ascending directly south via a steep heather-covered spur. The slope becomes less steep at about 400m altitude and the heather is replaced by short grass, which makes the going considerably easier. There are great views over Roads Lough and along the precipitous valley sides to the left. At point B (V533 862) you will emerge into a broad, almost flat area between Kells Mountain and the East top. Turn left and walk 300m. The broad summit area rises fairly sharply for about 20m and is a a mixture of rock and grass. The summit is marked by a significant cairn. Time for ascent 1.5 hours.

This is the last top(612) on the Knocknadober ridge heading North East and is an easy walk from Kells Mountain. Given that our car was parked on the coast road ( approx. C (V525 875)) we descended via the north flank of the mountain on steep ground encountering serious amounts of heather and high ferns - enough to convince us that a descent from Kells Mountain would probably have been a better option. Scrambling route on NNE spur
by markmjcampion

I followed Li50's directions initially but when I got to the first fence corner I took a notion to head over for a gawk at Roads Lough. well worth it too as the lough sits obliviously beneath some very steep ground on the lower slopes of Kells East Top. I then raised the ante on my first notion and took a second notion to climb up the steep slopes on the eastern side of the lough, starting from D (V53731 86882). If you've not got long legs not a head for heights and scrambling experience then this is not for you...you could still go up this spur but it would be better to start about 200m north of the lough. Anyway, the way up was tricky but there were enough footholds and heather to grab onto and once the tough initial part was out of the way the rest was plain sailing. That said, I wouldn't fancy it in summer conditions when the heather and ferns might prove irksome. A little over an hour to the summit.
As I tried to take a summit pic from Kells My, my battery went from 6% to the dreaded 5% so no joy. Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/251/comment/21853/

Great hike up Kells East

Three of us climbed this. My nephew cooled off in Roads Lough on the way up. The weather was nearly perfect. It was steep but manageable. This is my first entry on MV. Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/251/comment/20202/
