This is the last top(612) on the Knocknadober ridge heading North East and is an easy walk from Kells Mountain. Given that our car was parked on the coast road ( approx. C (V525 875)) we descended via the north flank of the mountain on steep ground encountering serious amounts of heather and high ferns - enough to convince us that a descent from Kells Mountain would probably have been a better option. Scrambling route on NNE spur

I followed Li50's directions initially but when I got to the first fence corner I took a notion to head over for a gawk at Roads Lough. well worth it too as the lough sits obliviously beneath some very steep ground on the lower slopes of Kells East Top. I then raised the ante on my first notion and took a second notion to climb up the steep slopes on the eastern side of the lough, starting from D (V53731 86882). If you've not got long legs not a head for heights and scrambling experience then this is not for you...you could still go up this spur but it would be better to start about 200m north of the lough. Anyway, the way up was tricky but there were enough footholds and heather to grab onto and once the tough initial part was out of the way the rest was plain sailing. That said, I wouldn't fancy it in summer conditions when the heather and ferns might prove irksome. A little over an hour to the summit.

Great hike up Kells East
