[Ed.: We are advised that the Start Point (L88170 61411) is no longer available to the public. Other Start Points for Leenaun Hill are available on mountainviews.ie, e.g., Tracks 1416 or 3640.]
Given Leenaun's location nestled between the Maamturk, Partry, Ben Gorm, Sheefry, Twelve Ben and Mweelrea ranges, it is no surprise that it's namesake hill boasts great views. On a good day, views in all directions are spectacular.

Leenaun Hill is a well climbed hill and easily reached from a number of directions. Perhaps the easiest route for an out and back walk, is from (L88170 61411), [Ed.: see note above.] on the R366, where there is a gate and a track. Starting from here means an out and back distance of c.6k and 1.5 hours.

There are also a number of potential starting points along the N59. There is room to park one car at Boat Tour W (L85017 62467), and several more at A (LA (L856 624)) and B (LB (L870 620)), where the Western Way leaves the road. Access is also possible from a shared entrance at C (L87370 61831).

Various of these entry and exit points can be combined to keep the walk interesting, perhaps also taking in Bucan to the West. A good route is to begin from one of the points on the N59, climb to Bucan, along the ridges to Leenaun Hill, and descending to the R336. Or to minimise the road walk, the descent to C (L87370 61831), close to the Leenaun Hotel is also a good option.

Landowner sign " No Hillwalkers allowed "
by Rossie73 12 Jul 2020
Hi, I tried to do this hill, Sun 12th July 2020. At the gate 500m from Leenaun, on road toward Maam, there was a distinct sign saying " No Hillwalkers allowed". A neighbour in a car pulled up and vocally said the landowner had spent €11K on fencing. The sign was put up about 2 months ago. It was too wet a day for me to photo the sign.
The only way up was 500m on from the hotel taking the Western Way track. Thank you, John Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/246/comment/20813/

A relatively easy walk without too many rocky sections but rewarding views from the 618 metre summit. We started from the Car Park for the Killary Harbour (Grid Ref A (L856 624)) and made our way up the river to the Western Way, but a more sensible way would be to access the Western Way from near (B (L870 620))! Left the Western Way at D (L847 619) and made our way to the ridge via (E (L851 607)). Followed the ridge down then up to the summit. Excellent views of the Benchoonas, Kylemore Lough and Lough Fee withy Knockbrack in the distance (see photo). Easiest way down was to follow the line of the sheep fence down the ridge then cut across near the deserted village buildings to access the road at (F (L874 618)) on the west of the river. Taking it easy and with lots of stops it took us about 7 hours to do the 10 kms! Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/246/comment/2409/

Starting and ending at G (L615 882), just a couple of hundred metres along the Maam road out of Leenaun vollage, there is space for a car or two on the left hand side of the road. Walk back down the road about thirty metres where you will see a track which follows a stream from Leenaun Hill. Leave the track at point H (L610 882) and cross the stream, and follow a fence with takes you all the way to the top, mostly grassy but occasionally quite steep. Spectacular views in all directions. Pic shows approach towards summit taken at about 400m. Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/246/comment/4249/

emaxwell on Leenaun Hill

3 of us climbed it from a point 1 mile from Leenaun on the road to Maam. We walked the horseshoe and descended down the river into the centre of Leenaun. It took 4 hours with lots of stops for photos. Well worth the climbing effort for the ever changing views. Very slippy descending as my sore elbow can testify.
