A view of the human foot-shaped island of Carrickanine with its remarkable resemblance to one of Pepe's feet after a day out trekking barefoot in the mud. The photo was taken from the shady shore of Sheep Island. In the distance, to the left of Carrickanine, you can see Garrarus beach.
Access on foot to Sheep is possible for a good window of a couple of hours either side of low. Park at Kilfarrassy and walk to the eastern end of the beach. A careful walk over a sort of boulder-field of rocks for about a 100 metres leads to another beach (often a nudist beach in good weather). This gives easy access to Sheep.
Now the bad news: to climb this southern side of Sheep you would need ropes and grappling hooks and carry out a reenactment of that cliff scene from the Guns of Naverone.
Sheep is so sheer that even a stalwart like Pepe baulked at the idea and promptly hit the nearest pub for the remainder of the day - consoling himself with the thought that the day was not wasted - shur isn't it a grand shoreline walk over and back from Kilfarrassy.
