The Most Stunning.

Visiting this Island in August 2014 with some friends as part of an Island adventure which included Inishmore and Inishmaan i found this to be the most stunning of the three.The shortest ferry route is from Doolin in Clare but you can opt as we did to get the Aran Island Ferries from Rossaaveel in Galway. Fantastic low level walks around the Island but the summit is located on private land and as the stone walls are so high the view from the summit is restrictive .Cattle graze on the summit and the farmer is never too far away but he is a very nice guy and we had a great chat together he even stood in for a photo . This hike can be broken into two sections. A looped walk taking in the East side of the island and a looped walk taking in the West side of the island. If time is against you do the East side or rent a bike and do the lot!

From the pier follow the waymarkers clockwise around the East side of the island. There are lots of sights to see on this loop including a shipwreck as seen on the Father Ted intro, lighthouse, castle and a signal tower, all the while looking across at the entire stunning Cliffs of Moher coastline. If you want to take in the actual high point on the island at 57 metres, it's somewhere past the Castle but it looks like it is on private land off the waymarked trail. I tried one attempt to reach it by jumping a few high walls but to no avail As I was at a height of around 50 metres and only about 100 metres away from the 57 meters I am ticking the box on this one.

The loop ends up back in the village so we had lunch in the Aran Islands Hotel before doing the loop walk on the West side of the island. There are not as many sights to see on this side of the island but there are nice coastal views and views out to neighbouring Inishmaan, and a nice stone crafted monument to honour those lost at sea. Again the loop finishes up back in the village and for us Tigh Ruairi's for a cold beer. Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/2340/comment/20144/
