New Comment: Low tide route

I cycled to L84233 23241 A from Bealdangan but if you were driving you could park near the bridge to Furnace Island and walk back the road. The local farmer [Colm] is a very nice fellow as well as a top class stonemason and had no problem with my heading up the hill. Be sure to give him the time of day but be prepared to have your ears more exercised than your legs! Head along the shore and you will soon see why low water is needed for this route - the alternative involves impenetrable brambles. This aside, it's an easy 30 min up and down with a mixture of grass and rock. Some minor scrambling around too if you like. Nice views from the top including local islands, nearby fishery, Inis Mór and across the bay to Cnoc Mordáin. Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/2235/comment/22796/

Picture: Memorial to Brig St. John disaster at Lettermullan church
New Comment: So close but yet so far!
by markmjcampion  Mon 5 Apr
Colm [local farmer] had told me the story of the tragedy of the Brig St. John and alerted me to the memorial at the local church. The brig was lost in a huge storm just off the coast of Massachusetts in October 1849, having sailed out of the pier between Lettermullan and Furnace island the previous month.
