Please Respect the Birds
by Pepe  24 Jun 2018
Do note that this island is an important bird sanctuary. The scale of birds here surprised me, much more than on neighbouring Colt and Shenick islands, I should have heeded the cacophony of their alarms, instead I tramped on their island. A short while later, on Colt Island, another kayaker filled me in on what happens when someone disturbs them. They fly off leaving the nest unguarded. Then gulls swoop and snatch the young of other species, cormorants for instance. I had just traipsed through the middle of a cormorant site on Patrick's Island so imagine how guilty I felt because of my ornithological ignorance. The kayaker said he always gives that island a wide berth, and perhaps it would be best if the rest of us did the same. Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/2223/comment/19952/
