When the tide is out access is safest from the north side of the exposed isthmus. This island is worth visiting to see some of the remains of Irelands only whaling station. A Norwegian company operated here from 1908 to 1912 before closing. The Islanders from the South Island took all the jobs and left the awful smell for the North Islanders ! These islanders after a brief strike were paid one pound a week when the annual rent was five pounds a year.
