First time up Scarr, and found access from Oldbridge hampered by heavy duty fencing which looks like it is protecting a new plantation from browsing deer. That grassy boreen people are talking about, which lies at the end of the road with several houses on it, is firmly fenced off. I would just say we were there in darkness and it is likely that the gate can be opened, we didn't check that, we thought we had the wrong gate!! Apart from that little difficulty, the ascent was straight forward although fairly steep on that approach.

The walk from Scarr across to Kanturk is really nice, there is a surprising sense of remoteness. The boulders and rocky outcrops of Kanturk make for a type of garden scene. Some of the heather gives the illusion that it was very carefully planted.

Another slight difficulty is how you drop down to the Inchavore river from Kanturk. There is no path and you are just wading through heather on a steep slope. We aimed to cross the river at a point well into the conifers which are very densely planted. We could see a fire break at a distance as a slight gap in the trees, but it was hard to make out as the trees on the outside were growing into the gap. But the fire break was there and offered a pleasant descent to the river, although at the end it led us to birch trees in a very marshy place which was not very nice but at least the river was easy to cross at this point. This point is well upriver from the oak trees where apparently there is a more popular crossing point. Anyway, I would look for another way to get down to the river if doing it again!
