Notes on name: The séimhiú of mhór is odd, since mullach is usually masculine and so one would expect 'Mullach Mór'. Price recorded the pronunciation 'Mullawore'. Theoretically, it could be Mullach Corr. However, in addition to the difficulty of explaining the cited pronunciation, corr as an adjective in place-names usually means 'pointed' rather than 'round', which would certainly not be appropriate for the dome of Mullacor.

NE Park in the environs of Glendalough and pick up the start of a trail at
UpCP (T11149 96363) - from here you've options.a) Follow good forest tracks to A (T11330 95687) and take a steep path through the heather to the summit of Derrybawn. Follow the SW ridge for about 1.5km and turn right when you meet the Cullentragh-Mullacor ridge. Expect v. mucky ground en route to M. 2Hrs+
b) Take tracks to B (T10922 95702) and follow a well-defined trail to The Spink and on to Lugduff SE Top. Head SE along boggy trails down to a broad col and on up to M. 2hrs+
c) Stay in the valley following forest tracks in a roughly SW direction that will eventually bring you to the col that lies to the WNW of the summit. 1.5hrs+
SE. You can also start from the Shay Elliot Memorial at
ShayEl (T12998 92190) and follow tracks over Cullentragh [1.5hs] or you can park at the Glenmalure Hotel car park and walk up the road to C (T10790 91132) from where you can pick up forest tracks to the SE shoulder of M. [1.5hrs+]SW. Park at
GMlur Wf (T08064 92779) and follow the Wicklow Way as it zig zags up the slopes, eventually leaving you at the col to the WNW of the summit with the aid of railway sleepers. [1.5 hrs]Notable tracks incl. track/2259, track 2361 and track/4040.

Not a comment on Mullacor per se this, but sadly a comment on the detritus that some wallkers are leaving behind them on the saddle between Mullacor and Lugduff - in the clearing just where the Wicklow Way goes into the forest on the way back to Glendalough. It might be because the circuit of the Spink and back to Glendalough via the WW is becoming more and more polular but this clearing is a mess - discarded tea bags (why can't people make their tea before they come out on the hills), banana skins, some plastic bottles and more
People - these bits of rubbish might eventually decompose (I'm not sure if tea bags even do) but what about "leave no trace". It's no big deal to take your rubbish back to the car with you - there's loads of bins in the car park in Glendalough. Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/177/comment/3003/

Good views from the top over Glendalough valley. Can be climbed with Lugduff from Glendalough car park. Walk along the northern shores of the lake, cross the river, head up the
slope to the top of Lugduff, on to Lugduff SE Top and over the boards to Mullacor. Then descend via Derrybawn to Glendalough. Time needed about 4 hours. Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/177/comment/761/

Well this was only my second outing (ever) and after walking the Spinc last week we decided to up the ante on Sunday last. From the car park at Glendalough we walked to the foot of Derrybawn and ascended from the turn at the bridge directly up to the next path. As a first 'climb' and out of breath we waited where unfortunately one of ours was unable to continue and thus lost six of our number back to the Spinc. Ten souls (including Simba the Sheltie) continued upward to the summit through the heather. With six novices (+ Simba) we found the going tough enough but the view from the summit was beautiful. After a short stop for lunch – which seems to be that much more satisfying after a climb – we traversed the windy ridge toward Mullacore.
Mucky booted and with a sable Sheltie which now looked more like a long haired fox, complete with black undercarriage(!) we slowly made our way up a boggy Mullacore and reached the summit now three hours after beginning the trek. Satisfying! The descent was slow enough but there was a bit of traffic coming our way all complete with smiley faces. We reached the boardwalk which denotes the Wicklow Way. After a short stop for refreshments in the forest we made our way back to Glendalough where we met up with the rest of our number.

The approaches to Mullacor are becoming badly eroded. Picture shows the small summit cairn surrounded by typical boggyness! Not much to see in the mist, but as Mullacor has one foot in Glendalough and the other in Glenmalur, it offers great views of both when it's clear. Mountain Views's GPS co-ordinates are within 30 metres of the actual summit. Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/177/comment/1587/
