Bedrock type: Purple & green sandstone & siltstone, (Caha Mountain Formation)

This is the highest peak in the Cahas between the Healy Pass and the Tunnels Road. Knockowen is also the name of a townland in the parish of Tuosist.   Knockowen is the second highest mountain in the Caha Mountains area and the 181st highest in Ireland.
