Also called the Mottie. The second element in Croaghanmoira is most likely from the title of the Earl of Moira who had lands in the vicinity of Greenan. Papers of the Kemmis family record that Thomas Kemmis purchased lands in the area around Greenan in 1805 from the Right Honourable Francis Rawdon Hastings, Earl of Moira. Croaghanmoira stands above Greenan and would clearly have been part of this estate. It would thus be the Cruachán on the Earl of Moira's land, prior to the sale of the land in 1805, in contrast to Croghan Kinsella, which lies about 10 miles to the S.   Croaghanmoira is the 176th highest place in Ireland.

Flags Pass - Wicklow way portion and loop into Ballynacor Estate permissive acce
by gaoithe  5 Mar 2022
We did a portion of Wicklow way from Flags pass T 08752 87588 starA (AKA Drumgoff Gap) - (with diversion to Slievemaan South top) - to near Drumgoff, then leaving Wicklow Way up road to T 10204 89297 starB and into Ballynacor permissive access for responsible walkers steep up to Fananierin ridge - Fananierin top and then steady long up ridge following fence most of the way to Croghanmoira South top. Then steep uphill to Croghanmoira impressive height.

About 13km 650m ascent in total.

We did the loop anti-widdershins to put the not too strong but cool steady North breeze at our backs along the not very sheltered ridge.

Fananierin top looks very close when you first join the ridge. There is a series of short fun false tops before you actually reach the summit.

It is probably useful for people to see the sign put up by the Ballynacor Estate which allows permissive access to the area to responsible walkers asking them to keep to the paths shown (which are perfect for visiting the peaks and/or doing ridge walk). So I'm uploading a photo of that. The "you are here" on the map is below Fananierin close to T 10204 89297 starB. Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/168/comment/23429/
