The Cloon Horseshoe is a long, difficult day's walk best done on a dry summer's day but it's one of the best in the country. Critchley and Schwartz's "Hillwalking in County Kerry: the Mangerton and Dunkerron Mountains" on either YouTube ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iiovo-tLcp0 ) or Vimeo commences with their Mangerton traverse but quickly moves to the Dunkerrons' Cloon horseshoe at about 2.08 minutes. It's a wonderful journey. Martin and Sharron have taken the trouble to write up their experiences (see Martin's notes here at Track 2604 and Sharron's Blog at kernowclimber.blogspot.ie).
They began their 22k walk at the northern tip of Cloon Lake ascending Beann NET 692 en route to Mullaghanattin 773, retracing some steps back to Beann NET, on to Beann 752, Beann SWT 657, Beann FSWT 636, Sallagh 570, Finnararagh 667, Coomnacronia 636, and descending Coomura Mountain 666.
The stunning opening shot ( above) shows the view across Cloon Lough from the north toward Coomura. Well worth a watch if you intend to attempt any of the many variations of this route. Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/162/comment/17705/

When I was planning a route taking in Coomura Mountain followed by Knockmoyle, I was a little concerned about Simon3's comment about the navigational challenge presented by the ground around the 'Source of the river Inny' as indicated on the OS map - roughly at the col between Coomura and Knockmoyle at the head of the Coomura coom. As Simon3 mentions, this is nothing at all like the typical coum headwall. The ground is curiously riven and you will find yourself gaining and losing height and even detouring south to make way. Others have mentioned the "Source of the River Inny", wording which appears on the OSI 1:50k map around the coum to the immediate west of Coomura. Here is a photo into the coum from further west. From the angle it's hard to work out the direction the water is flowing. In fact it is right to left.
