David Kirk on Slieve Binnian North Tor, 2005

David Kirk - 9.3.05 - Some nice pictures of Binnian North Tor - here's one FROM the top which I think shows why it's worth the effort (try the crack on the south side where you have to push your sac up before you; there isn't t room for you both!). Just think, these blocks of granite have been lying here pondering life, the universe and evrything since the end of the ice age! Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/156/comment/1517/

Southern Man on Slieve Binnian North Tor, 2006
by Southern Man  20 Feb 2006
Sat 18 Feb 2006 - Slieve Binnian starting from the Head Rd, up past the abandoned quarry, then left the track to head straight up the south eastern face. Last 150m was tough going but heather ensured safe footing, quite icy at the summit in and around the tors. Photo is taken looking NW towards Ben Crom, note ice in rock pools. Great views of surrounding peaks. Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/156/comment/2195/

Looking south from here you can a great view of the ridge north from Slieve Binnian. The fine tors there are known as the Back Castles. Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/156/comment/2796/

We also tackled North Tor from the north. Viewed from this direction, it can appear quite intimidating to those not up for scrambling, though access from the southern side of the rock formation is straightforward enough. The area around the summit is pretty small, with steep drops on all sides -- not very safe on a windy day like today! Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/156/comment/1992/

At very short notice I managed to get in a hike in the Mournes. Has anyone else come across the "prospecting" on Slieve Binnian (Summit of North Tor) on the North West side? There is a seam that runs to the surface on the second tor, approaching from Slieve Binnian itself, which has been drilled. A significant amount of rock (maybe 2-3 cubic metres) has been prised off to excavate the seam itself. There are crystals to be found in some of the rock which is left to one side so I guess the "crystal collector" made off with the mother lode. A Spectacular Rock
by Rob_Lee  14 Jul 2013
This peak is completely different to any other Irish peak I've climbed and it a was perfect to mark my 50th mountain. I was worried that i might need rope and gear to get to the top but there's a handy track that starts on the south west side between the main rock and another massive boulder. If you're in the Mournes then this is definitely worth a look and if you a climber, bring your rack and rope. Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/156/comment/15036/
