It might seem surprising that two major peaks get their name from trees normally found at valley level. However, the tree in question may well be the wych elm, which is the only native Irish elm. It tolerates quite rocky soil and grows in upland areas, particularly in the NW. Even so, the name probably referred to a place on the lower slopes of the range.
