New Sunday shoes?
by Pepe 2 Jan 2025
You can do this walk in your Sunday best as there are paths leading all the way up and around the Great Hall up top.
However, if you want to venture off the beaten paths and stand on the grassy bits out on the very edge of the sheer rock that drops on most sides, or if you want to scale the various rocky outcrops or crumbled walls in search of the elusive high point, then don some footwear with a bit of grip.
Don't forget to look up as you pass under the impressive gate mentioned by Fergalh. The gate still shows its murder hole through which boiling oil was poured down on unwelcome visitors. Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/1528/comment/24347/

A fine stop off if down in county Laois. I was lucky to visit on a sunny cloudless day. Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/1528/comment/24359/

Short trek to summit
by Fergalh 21 Dec 2024
Parked at A (S532 981) beside church parking for ten cars or so. Headed north to Gate and information board about the history of the rock. Short walk along stone track led to impressive old gate enter through this and a short brisk climb leads to remains of castle with impressive views over the area. High point is unmarked to the north of castle Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/1528/comment/24343/
