Picture: I'm almost certain this is the summit
Very remote feel to this
by markmjcampion 30 Oct 2021
This is one of my favourite Kerry hills. It's got loads of character and is ideally located as a lookout to loftier locales. The ground to the north is full of cliffs and native forestry with some wonderful waterfalls.
I usually head up from the Esknamucky Glen. Walk along the Old Kenmare Road [this doubles as the Kerry Way] from Torc waterfall and when you pass Cores Cascade* you will soon come to a copse of trees A (V93737 81513). You can summit either from the start of this copse or from the end [or anywhere in-between I guess] Either way you'll have to traverse some rough ground [easier in Winter and early Spring] but it's a short pull-up and the going gets easier as you ascend. Indeed, if heading up from the start of the copse it's easy to avoid the tussocky grass by aiming for the plentiful rock on the slightly higher ground to the right as you head towards spot height 311. From here it's a pleasant stroll to the summit with very fine views of Torc, Purple Mt. group, the Reeks, Dunkerrons and the Mangerton group. It's about 1.5 to 2 hrs to summit from the lower Torc car park and maybe about 10 mins less from the upper one.
*As of Feb 2021 the bridge over the Crinnagh river to the NE of Cores Cascade no longer exists so, until a replacement is built, you will probably not be able to cross the river if there's been much rain. There are no rocks to help and if you really need to get through then you can eaither take off your boots or take a diversion on very rough ground.
[ Note: a comment of Oct 2021 reports the bridge was repaired. ] Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/1518/comment/22401/

You can also park at Derrycunnihy church DrCunn Ch (V91386 80277) and follow the Kerry Way from there to Esknamucky Glen and ascend from the copse I mentioned in my other comment. Being in the national park it's open countryside around here with no fences so you can ascend from any point that takes your fancy along the Kerry Way. Bridge restored.

Just to leave everyone know that the bridge over the river Crinnagh mentioned earlier by markmjcampion has been repaired. So anybody wanting to head to Cromaglan and beyond on the Kerry Way from Killarney can now do so in style. It's some improvement from what went before.

If walking from Killarney it's located just before Core's Cascade. Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/1518/comment/23309/
