Cn'avoe (V829 527) and drive up the road which curves around towards a farm. If there is a farmer present, ask permission to access the mountain through the gate at Cn'avoe (V829 528), although it has previously been granted with no problem. There is sufficient room to park at the farm entrance (also previously granted) or alternatively there is parking for one car a little bit back along this side road. Go through the gate and follow a curving, rising route around the mountain to the NW, before swinging NE around A (V818 534). The gradient is steep but quite manageable, a mixture of grass and rock underfoot. Continue in this direction for about 1.5km which will take you to the summit area. Simplest, safest return route is to retrace your steps, although you may wish to take in Glenkeel Top. For alternative route down, see that summit page.

Climbed Canshanavoe as part of a loop walk in March 2014, starting from the Healy Pass and including Knockowen, Cushnaficulla, Knockeirky, Glenkeel Top and Stoockeenalackareha (see track 2767). I was glad to see this summit was included in the new Arderin Beg list, as it has been one of my favourite spots along this long walk. The weather was rather cold and cloudy, with a few sunny spells (it even snowed for a few minutes on the way back to Knockowen), clear enough to enjoy the views almost all along the way though. The summit is topped with a small cairn. The area is wild and remote, and the views are extensive, especially to the E and NE towards the Caha Mountains, Glenlough Mountain, Glenkeel Top and the Sugarloaf Mountain ridge. Hungry Hill stands proudly to the SW. The views over Bantry Bay and Adrigole Bay to the S are best seen from a flattish area SSE of the summit (see other comment). Also some nice views towards Knockeirky, Cushnaficulla and Knockowen to the N. The ridge that leads to Knockeirky is quite long, but rather easy-going, despite a few ponds and peat hags to contour. A stunning viewpoint !!

Canshanavoe can be climbed from Glenkeel Lough (E). The ascent is quite steep from that side and it is worth having a short break before reaching the top to enjoy the amazing views over Bantry Bay and Hungry Hill to the S/SW and also over the steep cliffs W of Nareera to the E. There is a rather flattish area to the SSE of the summit, between contours 450 and 500m, strewn with endless bands of bare, flat rock, which is a fantastic promontory over Bantry and Adrigole bays (see pic). Knockout scenery

This walk turned out to be one of my all-time favourites. I did it on a fine August day approaching from the south with the kind permission of a friendly farmer. (See short summary.) The approach up the western slope was beautiful enough, with great views toward the surrounding coastlines, but the scenery to the east and north east presenting itself from the top was truly spectacular, other-worldly almost.
