Bedrock type: Psammite & semipelite, (Glenelly Formation)
Notes on name: This has been interpreted as Spéal Chuach, ‘scythe of cuckoos’ by John O’Donovan (OSNB) and ‘scythe of the bowl’ by Gregory Toner (PNNI 5). While spéal could theoretically denote a curved hill-slope, I know of no certain instance of this element in place-names. The first element is more likely to be speilg, a northern variant of sceilg, ‘rock, crag’. As this is a borrowing of Latin spelunca, which means ‘cave, den, lair’, it is not surprising to see it connected with the name of an animal, cf. Speilg an Fhiagh / Spellickanee / The Raven’s Rock in Co. Louth.

Picture: The broad, flat summit area.
Parking for a couple of cars at A (H718 997) A at the start of a track, which leads directly to the summit of Craigagh. From there turn west and cross the deep gully to B (H714 988), then turn SW and make the gradual ascent across boggy ground for about 1.3km to Spelhoag's high point, which is marked by a small pile of stones. The summit a broad, flat area of peat hags.

Quiet mountain

I climbed this mountain coming from the West side from Oughtmore mountain. I've never tried it but I'm sure Spelhoagh can also be easily accessed from the Moneyneany Road on the East side as well : the Dunlogan Road and Ubbernagapple Bridge" C (C719 998) " look like good areas to approach this summit. The top is mainly green with minor peat hags. I found one small rock at the top; I don't know whether it was placed there or not. Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/1422/comment/19929/
