Picture: Gully leading to the main ridge

Steep Ascent
by peter1  18 Feb 2018
There is ample parking at the trailhead, where a number of circular walks start and finish. Approaching the Knockanaffrin ridge from the East, provides a number of options once Coumduala Lough is reached. A steep ascent using the grass ramp, left of the lake, towards the minor ridge, where turning right, leaves the walker very close to the summit ridge. Another possibility would be an ascent of the obvious gully (see photo). I'm glad I didn't attempt this on my own as there are a number of very steep steps, mixed grass and rock, near the top. To the right of the gully, the ground is very steep with short cliffs while further right, the ground eases again and an ascent looks easy enough.
