A short diversion on a fantastic ridge walk.

Knockanafrinn South Top lies just to the SE of Clonmel and is separated from the main Comeragh range by a distinctive col. It's a rocky outcrop on the way to the main summit of Knockanafrinn. Great views abound incl. the northern coums of the Comeraghs, Slievenamon, Mt. Leinster and the Galtees/Knockmealdowns.
SW. Park at the busy but commodious Nire valley Nire (S27674 12847). Head east uphill on grassy then heathery slopes roughly following a line of white wooden posts. Go through a small gate in a sheep fence and follow the track uphill, downhill then gently uphill again to The Gap at A (S30103 13417). Turn NW, keeping the fence and an increasing vertical drop to your right. It's one of the finest ridges in the country with excellent views on either side but the trail is quite eroded.
From the Nire valley car park you can also follow a trail along a spur directly to the S top and you can also reach The Gap from a trail starting at the end of the road approx. 500m S of the car park.
E. Start at Douglas (S32203 14493) from where there is an official trail to the Gap. 30 minutes from the Gap will get you to the summit.

There is ample parking at the trailhead, where a number of circular walks start and finish. Approaching the Knockanaffrin ridge from the East, provides a number of options once Coumduala Lough is reached. A steep ascent using the grass ramp, left of the lake, towards the minor ridge, where turning right, leaves the walker very close to the summit ridge. Another possibility would be an ascent of the obvious gully (see photo). I'm glad I didn't attempt this on my own as there are a number of very steep steps, mixed grass and rock, near the top. To the right of the gully, the ground is very steep with short cliffs while further right, the ground eases again and an ascent looks easy enough.
