The scene of a decisive defeat during the rebellion of 1798. Hugely outgunned and almost surrounded by British forces, the rebels fought heroically, and the vast bulk of them escaped through what became known as Needham's Gap, which was not a geographical gap, but a hole left in the British forces when General Needham arrived late to the battle.
A very simple and sinfully easy hill to bag. Park at car park at Vngar (S98384 39999), which can accommodate about 50 cars. Nearby granite slabs detail the history of the location. Just beyond these a trail leads up a grassy slope to the high point, a walk of approximately two minutes. The summit is marked by a large outcrop of rock. There are fine views of the distant Blackstairs to the north west. What looks like the remains of a fort stands nearby, but was actually a windmill dating from the 17th century.
