The scene of a decisive defeat during the rebellion of 1798. Hugely outgunned and almost surrounded by British forces, the rebels fought heroically, and the vast bulk of them escaped through what became known as Needham's Gap, which was not a geographical gap, but a hole left in the British forces when General Needham arrived late to the battle.
A very simple and sinfully easy hill to bag. Park at car park at Vngar (S98384 39999), which can accommodate about 50 cars. Nearby granite slabs detail the history of the location. Just beyond these a trail leads up a grassy slope to the high point, a walk of approximately two minutes. The summit is marked by a large outcrop of rock. There are fine views of the distant Blackstairs to the north west. What looks like the remains of a fort stands nearby, but was actually a windmill dating from the 17th century.
What to say ! an historic hill, plenty of literature written about this hill and its troubled past, the hill was the site of a battle involving over 15,000 British troops and a large contingent of United Irish rebels on June 21st 1798. The hill is well signposted from Enniscorthy town, I was able to drive to Vngar (S98384 39999). Parking here for any amount of cars in a well made large carpark. There is a monument here commemorating the battle, behind it is a really well made path that leads to the top, a stroll of about 5mins. There is the remains of an old windmill and a small prominent rocky outcrop at the top of the hill, fantastic views of surrounding countryside and a bird`s eye view of Enniscorthy, if you happen to be in the area well worth a visit. A lovely little hill to kick off 2016 with. The sun even came out! Didn't need to change out of my party gear. Marvelous views for such a small outcrop. Well worth a visit. Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/1387/comment/18418/
The history of this place takes precedence over the actual scenery but there are lovely views over the town of Enniscorthy. Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/1387/comment/20200/
