The wooden gate at L8363681110 A gives access onto an initially promising track that becomes tangled and overgrown in places. It eventually peters out at a dead end and there are some difficult briars and high heather to get through to reach the northern slope of Kinknock. This northern slope is difficult enough. The high heather intertwined with briars and new growth which all cover the remnants of previous deforestation make underfoot conditions tricky in places, and make the haul up this slope hard work. I found an old rusted metal rope buried in the heather that was anchored somewhere up above. It was probably used as a zipline for the deforestation, and I glady used it to gain some ground up the difficult slope!

The summit area is easy to manoeuvre around and gives expansive views east to Ben Goram and Croagh Patrick, south to the Sheeffrys, north to Clew Bay and the distant Nephin Beg's, and west across to the Atlantic and its islands. Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/1325/comment/17563/

Kinknock Hill may not be as well known as its famous neighbours but its location allows for some great views.You have a choice of numerous routes to the summit by parking at the wood entrance L8363681110 A you can reach the summit L8439680672 B with no access issues but be aware this is a slog in parts thru high heather.Alternatively thru private land crossing where the fence is damaged adjacent to a holiday home L8480780805 C ,parking is also scarce on this narrow lane.
