Presumably the name is transferred from some nearby hollow to the mountain itself. Price has a useful note to this effect, but is unable to determine the hollow in question. There are three valleys in the vicinity: Fraughan Rock Glen to the north-east, the South Prison to the south-east and the North Prison to the north-west. The first two are both forested nowadays. The summit is marked as Percy's Table, named after a local landowner of the 18th century. Cf. Dawson's Table on Galtymore. P.W. Joyce gave the original form as Log na Coilleach, 'hollow of the (grouse) cocks'. However this seems doubtful. It does not show the urú which would be expected. Nor is the name connected with the deity Lug.   Lugnaquilla is the highest mountain in the Wicklow area and the 12th highest in Ireland. Lugnaquilla is the highest point in county Wicklow.

5/4/03 - Climbed Lug for the first time from Glenmalure and yes parts were definitly a "hands and knees" clamber. Was so impressed with the overall area/terrain, will re-walk via various routes over the next couple of months! Amazingly hot day, 17 degrees and cloudless blue skies - uncanny for April! **Access route from Glenmalure is to be short lived - landowner reacting to Hillwalker compo-claim of e50,000!!!!!! Oh no! Another entry for Lugnaquilla... The picture shows the South Prison with the saddle to Slievemaan on the left and Corrigasleggaun to the right, with Slieve Maan in the foreground. The picture was taken with 3x zoom from the summit of Carrickashane Mountain, 7.25 km SE of Lug. Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/13/comment/475/

nic (24/05/03) lug walk No.2 for me! This time via Seskin/ Camara. the weather climbed the mountains with us, wind and rain and 5% visibility - it made what should have been an easy enough walk, a much more difficult one. The rain clouds lifted for all of 5 minutes for a quick look on the summit. 2 hours up and 1.15 down. - we did meet a runner who did it in 40minutes!!! Went up Lug yesterday from Glenmalure via the Zig Zags and Clohernagh, fantastic weather all the way but the views were a bit hazy due to heat - a good complaint! A few quad bikers on top spoiled the moment but fortunately they didn't hang around too long. Second time up, previously did Camarahill route (in reverse) which seemed shorter/easier, hope to go via Fraughan Rock Glen next time Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/13/comment/969/
