Benleagh from Clohernagh, January 2003.

Starting at the car park at Baravore a lovely circuit on a clear day is to climb to Art’s Lough and then follow the grassy ramp to Clohernagh. See under Clohernagh for directions.
Follow the cliff edge to the right above Art’s Lough to give great views across to the Cliffs of Benleagh and the great bowl leading into the Fraughan Rock Glen and up into the glen itself.
It is possible to descend into this bowl where it lines up with the Cliffs of Benleagh and cross a stream to continue the circuit along the top of the Cliffs of Benleagh. From here there are lovely views of Art’s Lough which appears suspended on the shoulder of Clohernagh. Follow the boggy track above the cliffs to descend to a forest track going right to meet another forest track at a ‘T’ junction. Go left here and then take the next right at a sharp bend to arrive at the Baravore Youth Hostel.
Do not attempt this circuit in poor visibility. Trackback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/126/comment/318/

This photo shows the upper part of the climb from the south that I have described. It gives a good idea of the boulder-strewn, thickly vegetated terrain that has to be crossed. Trackback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/126/comment/2846/

Picture: The pile of stones I took to be the summit, with Lugnaquillia in the background.

I did a circuit from Glenmalure which included this summit in September 2009. I seemed to visit the highest point at T0386 9419 A, but when I checked my GPS trail later, I found I had been no closer than 50m to the spot height shown on the OS map at T0387 9414 B. The top is fairly flat, but the bog is highly eroded, so I suspect that the highest point has shifted. Trackback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/126/comment/4335/

An alternative circuit is to ascend Fraughan Rock glen, turn right and then head for Benleagh. From there aim for Cameabologue, before picking up the track at Table Mountain and heading back for Baravore. This is what Benleagh looks like in the snow! Taken from a similar angle to gwpr's picture. Trackback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/126/comment/328/

Another gratuitous picture of the cliffs at Benleagh! Taken with 3x zoom from the top of Fraughan Rock Glen after a descent from Lugnaquilla. Trackback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/126/comment/441/

Benleagh can be approached from the north. Take the track up Fraughan Rock Glen and turn right on to a track that follows the slopes of Benleagh looking over Glenmalure. Ascend through timber (difficult) to cliff edge or continue along the track to the river (T 046 949 C) , climb up to the left of the buttress, follow the woods and then ascend southwards to the summit. The summit itself is disappointing - a small cairn on top of a peat hag. You can then continue up Lug following a definite track up its northwestern flank to the summit.
