The Dictionary of Celtic Mythology gives the full name as Dá Chích Anann, 'the two breasts of Anu'. This goddess, also called Danu, was reputedly responsible for the fertility of the whole province of Munster. The summit cairns on both peaks, believed to be prehistoric, resemble nipples on the breasts. Strangely enough, the two peaks have the rounded aspect of a comely maiden's figure when viewed from the north-west (Killarney) or south-east (Ballyvourney), but have a triangular profile more reminiscent of a war goddess's breastplate when seen from the north-east (Rathmore) or south-west (Kenmare).   The Paps West is the second highest mountain in the Derrynasaggart area and the 128th highest in Ireland.

Just to answer the question on The City: The City or Cathair Crobh Dearg is an ancient stone fort at the northern foot of the Paps or Dá Chích. There is a holy well with a cult of the Virgin Mary, with rosaries traditionally said in a clockwise direction around the fort on Mayday, of late the nearest Sunday to 1st May. This is obviously a christianisation of the Earth Mother cult. The cairns on the Paps are supposedly megalithic burial chambers built on the mountains to resemble nipples. Dana or Anú was the goddess of Munster and the views are wideranging over her domain from Allihies on Beara to the Galtees in Tipperary. A walk combining the City and the Paps is like a pilgrimage back in time to the religion of our ancestors. The cultural and musical hinterland of Sliabh Luachra lies at your feet, the birthplaces of Gaelic poets Eoghan Rua O Suilleabhain and Aogán O Raithaille are immediately to the north. The Paps are more than a just another walk.... Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/125/comment/2671/
