Bray Head 2022
by Bobbio1969  28 Mar 2022
Even I don't count our local ramble, Bray Head, as much of a challenge, so I was a bit surprised to see it listed here. But it may be time to update Colin Murphy's report of July 2019. Since then, the "Windgates" route from O 27483 15429 starA has been improved greatly by the installation of galvanised pedestrian gates along the path, much easier than climbing locked farm-gates or squeezing between poles. Another change is that a refreshments van comes up (regularly I think) to around O 283 170 starB, about 300 m SE of the Bray Head Cross. But no loo...

Be aware that there may be cattle loose (it is farmland). Springtime is calving season, and in recent days a man has been severely injured by a cow which may have been alarmed by his dog, or perhaps earlier by another dog

Also improved is the Western route that leads from the Southern Cross roundabout on the Greystones road, up towards the Bray Head Cross. Start the official path at 27105 16851 starC (park in Briar Wood estate, about 100 m NW). Zig-zags ease the early ascent through the woods so that it would be almost wheelchair-accessible if it weren't for the coarse gravel on the path. On leaving the trees, the path continues straight up for maybe 400 m; then if you don't mind a bit of a scramble, bear left at the clump of trees and fences at 27937 17085 starD and head for the Cross. Otherwise, for the not-very-obvious easy option bear right (S) at the trees/fences clump and after 100 m, where there's a couple of galvanised gates very close to each other, turn left (N) again on to the path and continue to the Cross.

The Cross area itself often has crowds who have come straight up from Raheen car park at 27786 17739 starE, but the Western route is much quieter, and the Windgates route is quieter again. Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/1228/comment/23451/
