Short walk up to a splendid view point.
Short Summary created by simon3, JohnA, Harry Goodman  30 Aug 2022
Take the N56 N from Letterkenny tand then go right onto the L5912 signed for Calhame. After 1.2km take a minor road on the right C181157 starA. The tarred surface ends abruptly 250m along. and the road beyond this point is not driveable. Park and follow the now rough track for about 1km to a point where the tarmac surface returns and where a gate on the right C1901215390 starB leads on to a narrower but good stone track. Follow this W uphill to a cross track junction, and either continue straight on or go right. Both routes lead up to the Trig Pillar marking the top of the hill. A short out and back trip of 3km to a fine viewpoint NE across Lough Swilly to Inch Top and the hills on Inishowen and SW over Letterkenny to the distant tops of the Bluestacks. Knockbrin can also be approached from the R245 between Letterkenny and Ramelton by taking a minor road NW from C205145 starC and following it along through a cross roads to C1901215390 starB and the gate giving access to the hill, already described above. An unexpected rest stop !
by Harry Goodman  27 Apr 2014
A detailed description of how to access this hill is given in the short summary. When I climbed it on Easter Sunday 22 April 2014 I parked at C1901215390 starB, the point where the tarred surface ended and followed the now rough track up to its crest. I then made directly for the top up SE over trackless, rough and bumpy ground of heather, long grass and moss, crossing a couple of fences en route. Near the top I came across a good stone track which was not marked on my OSi Sheet 6 (3rd Edition) but clearly shown, I subsequently found out, on the MV map in the main display area for this hill, had I only taken time to check it out in advance of going there !!! On my way down I followed this track to a four way junction C1877015384 starD where a left turn led me down to a gate at C1901215390 starB. Another left turn and I was soon back at my start point. However on my way down, at the four way track junction near the top of the hill and my main reason for adding this comment , I came across an unusual wooden structure. This comprised of a shed, a raised area of decking, a small wooden shelter with rocking chair and a bench seat (see photo). All were well made, well maintained and given their relative isolation near the top of the hill left me wondering who had put them there and why ? No longer so easily accesible. Avoid this hill.
by magicstep  2 Jun 2017
I've been there few times in the past and it was nice, but this summit is no longer so easily accessible as of 2017 because there's a "Private, No Trespassing"sign at C1901215390 starB, there's a new house at point C1877015384 starD. Asking for permission is difficult without trespassing. Perhaps try climbing from the point C181157 starA through the heather straight to the top.
