Punching Above Its Weight
by Aidy  7 Mar 2017
I was in this area on Sunday, and had no real plans for hill walking as I was expecting relentless rain and a lack of views on hills covered with low cloud. Instead I was planning to drive along the coast, dashing from the car for a few photos when weather allowed. It turned out to be a beautiful day, and Croaghmuckros looked so enticing as I looked over at it from Muckros Head that I decided I would take a walk up using the lazy way - the access track on the northern side up to the mast at the summit.

Its a short, easy walk on that route, and a small hill, but it punches well above its weight in terms of views. Magnificent in every direction, with Slieve League, the Dartry Mountains, nearby Crownarad, and the stunning coastline all vying for attention. Crownarad and its SW Top could be easily done on the same day. Fantastic little hill. Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/1181/comment/18857/

A communication mast sits adjacent to the summit cairn which has an access road situated on the north side of the hill. But because of the ocean views i decided to park at G6231974504 A and ascend to the summit G6244374942 B over steep ground .Enjoyable. A great reward for a leisurely stroll
by bertandally  18 Mar 2019
We parked up at the entrance to the comms mast access road at G6186975866 C as we thought the access road was the best option for us as we had our 6 year old with us and regardless the recent weather would have made a direct ascent pretty risky we thought. We understand from local people that there are no problems with people going up the access road to reach the summit though we tried and failed to get direct confirmation today as no-one was home at the adjacent property. Lots of sheep here though and with the lambing season ongoing we made the decision to leave the dog at home. It was pretty easy going and the path is pretty much 2k on the nose, so it's a pleasant stroll. After admiring the views from the cairn area, we thought at first we couldn't make it over to the South edge in order to get a glimpse of trá na nglór and trá bán at the same time as we often swim at both beaches, but we found a well trodden route in the end. A little wind shelter is constructed in the little depression on the main bit of the summit and would make for welcome relief if the weather changed. Amazing views up here of Muckross Head and even with poor visibility today we could still easily make out St John's Point 10k away. Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/1181/comment/20460/
