Hookin up with the list
by eamonoc  13 Jan 2014
After Slieveroe i headed down the N81 and at whitestown cross I took a right turn towards Stratford, just before I entered the village I took another right turn drove uphill past the local Stratford, Grangecon GAA grounds and about 5 mins later pulled in at the entrance to a small waterworks on the left . Enough room to park one car without blocking the entrance. No one around here to ask about access, climbed over the locked gates and onto a rough path this immediately swung right but I headed directly uphill following the faint traces of a path beside a small forest. This path was overgrown with gorse and briars but I was able to push through and make uphill progress, when I could no longer follow the path due to the gorse I was able to gain access to a field on my left. Just inside the fence and keeping the forest on my right I easily arrived at the top of the hill . The weather had deteriorated badly by now very windy and wet so I didn`t hang around. I noticed a mast across the field I walked over towards it looking for another access route, there was a grassy track heading downhill in an easterly direction through farmland, I retraced my upward route back to the car. Total time from car to car 22mins and a distance of 1.2km. I drove around this hill towards Stratford and I saw several local gun club signs advising people that the lands on that side of the hill were preserved for gun club members.
