Bedrock type: Megacrystic granodiorite, foliated, (Slieve Gamph Igneous Complex, megacrystic)

The hill of Carranarah, which, immediately behind the town of Foxford, rises to a height of 600 feet above the lough - the winter level of the lough itself being 42 feet - commands a good view of Loughs Cullin and Conn, and of the mountains lying around its northern shores, and generally of the poor, wretchedly- cultivated, but romantic country lying around Foxford. (James Fraser, Hand Book for Travellers in Ireland, 1844) This peak is named Curanary on Bald’s Map of Mayo (1830). The name Carranarah is marked on the 25” to the mile map, but there is no indication of any monuments. Any information on the origin of the name would be welcome.   Carranarah is the 1411th highest place in Ireland.

A small hill with lovely views over Lough Cullin and Lough Conn to the bulk of Nephin. I took a small road out of Foxford and parked at 281 023 starA. I walked straight on where the road ended and turned into a rough track. I took a left turn at the end of the forest and followed it's edge to the rough boggy ground beyond. The trig point is visible from the forest end and I made for it and was rewarded by the fine views mentioned before. The OS map has the summit higher than the trig so I made a beeline for a rocky outcrop that looked higher disturbing Snipe and Golden Plover in the process. Lough Muck is laid below from this side of the hill. There is also a large cross on a lower promontory which I declined to visit. Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/1038/comment/4177/
