Mizen has been Brow beaten

Contrary to popular belief, Mizen Head is not the most southerly point on the mainland of Ireland. Nearby Brow Head holds that title.
Located on the promontory are an old signalling station, a weather station, and a lighthouse. The signalling station, now a museum, is open to visitors. The "99 steps" are a long series of steps on the pathway across to the rocky outcrop upon which the station was built.
Access here could be tricky, I parked at the far end of the visitors centre carpark and made a quick uphill dash when no-one was looking, crossing farmed fields first then open bog. Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/1020/comment/5846/

Stunning views

Park in the public carpark and walk back the road to the first gate on the left hand side. Go through another gate on the immediate left and walk up the field to a gap in the top left corner. Get over the wall to the left of this beside a gate with metal spikes designed to impale anything that comes near it and head to the right, uphill towards a wall/rampart that is becoming overgrown with heather and gorse. From here, it is a straightforward push to the NE, through a wooden framed gap in the fence/wall near the skyline ridge and an easy climb onto the peak. The views over Dunlough Bay and the rest of the Mizen peninsula are extensive and beautiful. Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/1020/comment/17608/

Picture: My wife and I on Mizen Peak
Lovely Peak
by paddyhillsbagger 9 Oct 2010
The visitors centre was closed for bridge works( as it was at the end of my Malin2Mizen cycle a couple of months earlier) so following jackill's route, made my way to the old Signal Tower at A (V740 239). A path heads NW from here to a wall running NE which meets another wall NW running up the ridge of Mizen Peak which comes approved by the wife (who doesn't normally accompany me and had me "grounded" for a period) as there is a path to a relatively short climb with no steep inclines with spectacular views on the sunny day we walked it. Lovely little peak. Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/1020/comment/6130/
