Brí Éile, '(fortified) hill of Éile', is the earlier Irish name of this hill. Éile (Ely) is a large territory covering parts of Offaly and Tipperary. Bearnán Éile (Devilsbit Mountain) is at the other end of it. The Hill of Croghan is the remains of an old volcano. A bog body, known as 'Old Croaghan Man', was found in the vicinity in 2003.   Croghan Hill is the 1318th highest place in Ireland.

Picture: The ruined Trig Pillar.

Trig Pillar demolished by vandals
by TommyMc  4 Feb 2019
The trig pillar on the summit of Croghan Hill has recently been all but demolished by what seems to be an act of wilful and destructive vandalism. The remains of a large burned-out tyre now sit alongside the ruins of the trig pillar. It's hard to understand the mentality of whoever did this.

Apart from that, the circa 650m gentle walk up from the community centre is as idyllic as ever. I was chaperoned the entire distance up by two large but remarkably enthusiastic and friendly black dogs. The old graveyard to the east is worth a detour.
