Brí Éile, '(fortified) hill of Éile', is the earlier Irish name of this hill. Éile (Ely) is a large territory covering parts of Offaly and Tipperary. Bearnán Éile (Devilsbit Mountain) is at the other end of it. The Hill of Croghan is the remains of an old volcano. A bog body, known as 'Old Croaghan Man', was found in the vicinity in 2003.   Croghan Hill is the 1317th highest place in Ireland.

Climbed Croghan Hill today in beatiful weather, once again thanks to Mountainviews and previous posters for the info on this Gem of a hill, had no difficulty finding the hill or the route up. Despite its modest height the views from the top were outstanding in all directions. Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/1017/comment/15034/
