Prominence: 205m, Isolation: 5.4km ITM: 481405 811508 Bedrock type: Quartzites and calc.& graphitic schists., (Inishderry Formation) Notes on name: Bunmore West and East are townland names. However, William Bald's map of Co. Mayo (1830) shows 'Bonmore' also a hill-name. This is unusual in that Ir. bun, 'bottom, base' would not be expected in a hill-name. This may be due to confusion of bun with binn, 'peak'. Previously Bunmore West in MV. Has been called Ballycroy Hill.

As of April 2012, no-one has reported visiting Bunmore. Here at least is a picture of the summit which must have one of the best Mayo views available. Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/1007/comment/6783/

Edge of the Wilderness

Bunmore Hill a low level hill situated between the coast and the Nephin Beg range with fantastic views both inland and across to Achill that is if you ignore the disused aerial and shed close to the summit.
I parked beside an old cottage roof collapsed at A (F81698 12425) and walked 25 meters further in road turning right which allowed me open mountain access to the summit at B (F81429 11500). On the ascent I stopped at an old famine cottage in ruins at C (F81566 11885).
The townland of Bunmore brings home to you the upheaval of that period - population 1841 ...57 people 8 houses....1871...one person one house Linkback: mountainviews.ie/summit/1007/comment/14837/
