Users Online oddities - FIXED perhaps
Context of comment:AllYou may see some weird "users" in the Users Online list. There is an error here that's being researched prior to correction (hopefully). admin@mountainviews.ie Message:A fix for this apparent error has been applied. Please let admin@mountainviews.ie know of any unforeseen side-effects. Additional points:Postscript. This was a curious and odd fault. It has usually proved worth investigating such odd errors (instead of just covering them up) because they are often pointers to some deeper malaise. In this case and after hours of investigation it turned out that the most probable cause is search engines attempting to access an ajax .php file. The urls of the accessing hosts were all Google or Bing bots. Through MV usage tracking such accesses lead to insertion of a bogus record into MV's recent user list. If you are experienced with search engines you will be surprised to know that it appears that search engines can crawl addresses that only appear as literals in javascript. By crawling this the search engine caused problems for the website. The ajax modules now return a 401 error code and do not alter the MV recent user list. In the meanwhile various other nasty errors were found and corrected. I can guarantee any developer assisting MV that you will emerge with some penetrating insights into modern web practice. |

Outage on MountainViews, Mon11 Apr.
Context of comment:AllThere was an unusually long spell with MV down yesterday, regrettably. It was caused by a "networking fault" at our hosting company. The problem appeared to start at around 12:30 and wasn't corrected by the hosting company until around 22:45. If you are interested in such things you can follow what happened here: http://www.letshoststatus.com |

re Website errors - try fix
Context of comment:Donaltimeout error is usually corrected by reloading mountainviews in the browser. If this doesn't work, please get back to me. Cannor write to uservisit 7027 hasn't occurred previously and is probably a side effect of a hosting company operation yesterday morning where they moved the website to a new server. This also has not happened before. It is quite a subtle error, not manifesting itself till many hours after the move. Message:A correction has now been made and marking a summit as climbed now appears to work. Additional points:Please let me know if the fix works or there are any other errors yet to be uncovered. |

Finding Walk Suggestions - new way.
Context of comment:Suppose you are using MountainViews and you would like to see what shared tracks there are in a particular area perhaps as hints for your own walk. First, navigate so that your area of interest is displayed in the Detail map. Look at the new "Find Suggested Walks" section. Click on the button as shown in the picture. Then a list of tracks on the detail map now appear. You can further refine this by clicking on a button for type of walk. The diagram shows "Moderate" suggested. And the list below is for Moderate tracks in the area of Mweelrea. You can click more than one type. You can then click on any of the links to tracks which therefore form suggestions for your walks. These are arranged in descending order of relevance to the types requested. After you have clicked one, it should appear in the detail map. (Occasionally they are hard to see if they are near the edge of the map). Any user comments about the track will also appear. Hopefully you will find a general route of interest to you from which you can construct your own route. MountainViews however is a work in progress - feel free to share further tracks when you find omissions. GPS Note: It is possible to download the exact track for use by a GPS unit. We only recommend this if you are satisfied about the suitability of the shared track for your proposed expedition. Message:Let's emphasise that this list shows what members have shared through this website. Hopefully the route is reasonable and any comments with it are accurate, however this is not guaranteed. It is up to you to ensure that your route is appropriate for you and your party to follow bearing in mind all factors such as safety, weather conditions, experience and access permission. If you have reason to believe that any track (or indeed any other information) on MountainViews.ie is unsafe or goes against known landowner wishes or is unfit in any way, let us know. Additional points:As always with new features, do point out bugs or possible improvements. admin@mountainviews.ie |

Resolved Tues 29th Mar
Context of comment:The company that hosts MountainViews.ie intend to make changes on Tues 29/03/2016. They say there will be some downtime, that is website not functioning of around 10 mins. More importantly because of the nature of the change it is important that you do not make changes to the website during the morning of Tues. Don't post comments, tracks, forum comments please. If you do, they may be lost. Don't make other changes like rating tracks, ticking summits climbed, personal details changes etc. If you do they may be lost. admin@mountainviews.ie |

The day we climbed it...
Context of comment:As a member of hill-bagging.co.uk, I have just updated the Irish summits I bagged in 2015 and it has reminded me of an idea I had some time ago -and probably some of you already had as well- as the British site requests a precise date of achievement for each climb.Message:As far as I know, we do not have this possibility in MV, and I think it would be interesting to develop such a feature, maybe making it optional so that members who do not wish to indicate any date are not obliged to do so. But maybe it has already been suggested before ? |

Video playback - Minor improvement.
Context of comment:You can start looking at any of the offered videos on the Main Area Display. The playback starts in a panel that appears under the map. You can now change the summit or track being looked at as you wish with no interruption to the video. So for example if the video mentions a particular place or route you can get information on it while the video is running.Formerly when you changed the feature (summit or track) being viewed the video panel disappeared. Message:It's only a minor improvement but it makes looking at the videos much more flexible. Additional points:As always, do report any bugs with this feature. |

New method of Track Uploads.
Context of comment:When you "Upload a track" you will now see a somewhat different sequence of screens. After your track is uploaded you will find it divided into day routes as before, however this will be done in a list at the bottom of the page in the same style as "Tracks, Walks => View your tracks" page. Unlike the "Old" pre-2016 system, you need to individually select which routes are to be saved. In the old system essentially all useable tracks were saved and you needed to remove those you didn't want. Select the day in question from the list of routes in the list by clicking on the row. (Not on the "Creator" name, the rest of the row) You will then get some information about the usability of the track. For a new track in most areas you will get the option "Save & optionally add detail". Click this to save the track. It is then possible to add further information to the route, for example a title, your description etc. You can add formatted text with photos if you wish to. You can change this and all information later. You can also choose to add nothing at this stage. There are two options to continue: "Save & Rate" is the preferred option. It allows you to tell us a bit more about the route such as what status you assign to the route, what challenge you believe it has, whether it is suitable for children or cycling etc. You can also click on "Save no Rate". We are keen to have all routes rated as it will help users find tracks matching their needs. Other peoples ratings of a route will be taken into account, however the route creators rating will always be weighted strongly. If the GPX track you uploaded has multiple routes on it then repeat the above process for each day by clicking on the list at the foot of the page. You can see the Status of each day route in the list, to the right. Remember they have to be individually saved to be retained by the system. We hope you find the new method better and more consistent with the rest of MountainViews. Additional points:As with all changes, there is a good chance that parts of it are buggy. Let us know at admin@mountainviews.ie If you have suggestions for improvements, let us know. For a while the "Old" system for uploading tracks will be maintained. |

More video links added.
Context of comment:Another 38 video links have been added thanks to Peter Walker. On this occasion they show a wider variety of areas such as Wicklow, Donegal, Kerrry and a few farflung places like Greenland. Authors include scannerman, Patrick Zerkowski, Millar, McVeigh and Critchley. |
