Thanks re War Hill
Many thanks, padodes, for the info on War Hill. Eugene O'Curry, along with John O'Donovan, was one of the foremost scholars of the era, and was employed with O'Donovan by the Ordnance Survey, so no better source! ddiamond, logainm.ie is indeed a most useful site and one of the most reliable sources available on-line for place-names. I'd encourage everybody to use it. However, on this place-name it is worth noting that the Irish version Cnoc an Bhairr is marked 'ainm neamhdheimhnithe', i.e. unratified name, and that under taifid chartlainne (archive records), this proposed derivation has a question mark, precisely because Liam Price's Place-Names of Co. Wicklow is the only source for it, so I think there is still room for other interpretations...
