Hollow deity?
I see from Captain Vertigo's remarks that Sean Mac Connell is maintaining a high standard of journalism at the Irish Times. Indeed, he should not be impressed by the association of Lugnaquilla with the Celtic god Lugh, as this is completely spurious. Maybe he overheard this rumour in the pub, or dreamed it after a few pints. If he were to consult a reliable source, such as Liam Price's Place-Names of Co. Wicklow or Deirdre & Laurence Flanagan's Irish Placenames, he would see that Log na Coille merely means 'hollow of the wood'. This information is also available at www.mountainviews.ie The name has probably been transferred from some nearby mountain hollow (such as the North Prison and South Prison) to the mountain itself.
