Abandoned Gear on the Wicklow Way
Reading Simon3's comments on the abandoned gear on the Wicklow Way brought me back to the last time I did the Way at Easter '06. Knockree Hostel is at roughly the 20km mark on the Way heading from Dublin. I believe the hostel is a magnificant Hostel/Hotel now but back then it was a rundown quaint and charming place. Anyway, just below the Hostel as the Way continues along by the river is a favourite spot for the "Effluent Society" campers that Simon3 refers to. I have no doubt that this is where he saw the debris. Apparently word goes out and hordes of young people arrive regularly to rave the night away there, leaving the place destroyed afterwards. It's not an easy spot to reach without a car. Obviously it's been happening for years and I wonder why the landowner doesn't take action.
On a recent walk on Slieve Binnian and through Annalong Valley I wrote about seeing the exact same problem in the woods there-abandoned tents, bottles, rubbish and campfires. What is the solution to this problem-is there anything MV members can do to contribute to solving it?
