Completion of Beara Breifne Way
Having walked 536 km from Glengarriff to Leitrim village in 28 stages ( twice as long, (time -wise) ,as O Sullivan Beare !) four walkers ,Tom Barragry,Nicholas O Neill, Michael Donohue and Aidan Cruise recently completed the full Bear Breifne Way, which commemorates the historic retreat of O Sullivan Beare from the Beara peninsula in 1603 , when he reached O Rourkes castle in Leitrim village in 14 days with only 35 of the original 1000 followers surviving. The Way is composed of many individual way marked trails..Beara Way,Duhallow Way ,Muskerry, Way Ormonde Way, Multeen Way,Hymany way etc. While the walk is historically most interesting and stimulating, and quite beautiful in parts, much more co ordination needs to be done with signage, rights of ways and information along the route. Some parts of the trail have clearly recieved more attention than others, and are far easier and more attractive to walk than other parts. Nonetheless it is a rewarding walk for those interested not only in the historical significance of the walk, but also on account of the wealth of local history one encounters of,people, places ,historical figures, geographical features, beautiful vistas, castles, clans, Norman Tower Houses, big houses , monasteries & historical ruins along the way. A great way to learn about your country!
