Can't see the trees for the wood
Whatever one's view on the presence of sprawling conifer plantations that 'adorn' so many Irish mountains, the devastated landscape left behind when they are harvested has to be even worse in terms of sheer ugliness. For example much of the plantation to the NE side of the road overlooking Lough Tay in Wicklow has now been hacked down. The approach from Sally Gap to one of Wicklow's most beautiful spots is now scarred with a lifeless post-apocalyptc-type expanse of felled, rotting tree limbs. Passing it recently I noticed no new saplings had been planted and no attempt had been made to spare the scenery eg surely they could have left a narrow band of trees along the roadside to block the offending devastation behind. But then, considering the state's appalling record on protecting our scenic areas, a simple idea like that is probably beyond their imagination. |
