Picture: 'Cups' on Chimney Rock (Contract pics)

David Kirk
Inazone’s picture of the hollow in the granite boulder is intriguing. It's not at Binnian North Tor - there are no walls running up there. If it's on Binnian it could be at a place called the Back Castles, about half way between North and South Tors, but it could be anywhere. The hollow isn't a glacial feature and I can't imagine it being artificial which leaves only one explanation I can think of. The boulder itself looks like a glacial erratic - ie one moved from elsewhere by the ice and 'dumped'. If it was dumped on its side, so that the hollow is on what would have been the upper surface originally, it could be an old exposed and weathered drusy cavity. Attached is a pic of other such features, from Chimney Rock mountain. But this is only speculation.
