"Fox gives eagle the brush-off" from pdtempan Contract pics
Picture: Fox gives eagle the brush-off (Contract pics)

Close encounter
On a recent trip to Galloway I managed to capture this stand-off between an eagle and a fox. During a walk in the vicinity of Loch Enoch, we spotted a pair of eagles. One was circling over Dungeon Hill and landed on a rock a couple of times, only to take off again. After watching the eagle for some minutes, our leader Michael spotted through his camera lens another moving shape near the eagle on the hilltop. Zooming in, I managed to capture the moment at which an adult fox challenged the eagle. There was a good deal of luck involved in this shot as I couldn't make out much with the naked eye and didn't even know what animal it was until I played back the image on the camera. Michael suspected that the adult was protecting cubs. The fox seems to have won this encounter, at least for the time being, as the eagle was driven from its perch.
