Lightning kills 2 walkers in Wales
Two people have died and two were injured in separate lightning strikes while they were out walking in Wales' Brecon Beacons national park.
The Prince Charles Hospital in Merthr Tydfil, 40km north of Cardiff, said the two others remain in the hospital following yesterday's lightning storm on the Pen Y Fan mountain range in Wales. One of the injured was being treated for burns.
Earlier, the Welsh Ambulance Service said three people who were walking together had been hospitalised after being hit by lightning. The walkers included a man in his 50s.The hospital said one of those three later died, while the second person who died was injured separately.
Pen Y Fan is the highest peak in the range, and is regularly used for army training exercises. It is also popular with walkers.
Mark Jones of Brecon Mountain Rescue was on the mountain when the storm hit and went to help the casualties. He said it was "exceptionally unusual" for several people to be hit in multiple strikes on different peaks. He added: "I've been in Brecon Mountain Rescue for 30 years and I've never known anything like this," he told the BBC. "It was very, very loud." |
