First Snows of Winter
Gerry McVeigh has filmed the first snows of the season on Slieve Gallion reminding us that if you really want a white Christmas you should get the family onto the hills, a matter that requires some forethought. . Met Eireann has issued STATUS YELLOW weather warning:

Snow-ice Warning for Ireland
Very cold tonight (Friday) with lowest temperatures falling back to minus 3 or minus 4 degrees, with widespread frosty conditions, ice in parts too. Some wintry showers in the northwest, mainly for higher ground here, but some flurries on lower levels here too.
Issued:Friday 12 December 2014 13:00
Valid:Friday 12 December 2014 13:00 to Saturday 13 December 2014 12:00

Snow seems to attract many enthusiasts to the hills, not all of whom prepare properly. Its not that long ago since two of our most experienced mountaineers headed out to Wicklow in heavy snow and ended up having to be rescued in circumstances where they were without basic navigational aids. It was understood here to be a simple case of highly experienced guys forgetting that even humble Wicklow can be a challenge in the wrong conditions. Let's hope that everyone who goes onto the hills in the next few weeks plans for the possibility of a white out, and has the capacity to either survive a night, or get down safely, all of which is eminently achievable by simple planning.
