"Possible circuit of southern Comeraghs" from fingalscave Contract pics
Picture: Possible circuit of southern Comeraghs (Contract pics)

Re: Southern Comeraghs: Friday?
Captain Vertigo, after a quick look at your proposition I plotted out a possible route on the map and of course came up with the same starting point as you did, the small road heading west from Ballykilmurry Bridge. I donít know if there are access problems here though you can follow this road to itís end on Google Maps Street View where you can make out that familiar sign ďIf you go beyond this point, you are on a farmÖ..Ē etc. No signs visible at the point where you plan to turn off, some 350m in, at the blue sheep trailer. There are a number of other possible access points further south on this road. S308 023 looks a good bet.
I would head for the open hillside as soon as possible rather than follow those zig zag forest tracks, a personal preference, skirting anti-clockwise around that first corrie and approaching Coumaraglin from the north east.
The ground in the southern Comeraghs is indeed very boggy, particularily crossing the middle of the plateau. Not sure any frost tonight will be severe enough to put a cap on that! On the plus side though, the perimeters of the plateau are a bit drier.
Presumably youíll be bringing your bicycle to minimise the road walk part. Parking at the Mahon Falls car park, S314 080 ( Iím guessing this is your intended finish point? ) youíd have a short downhill cycle to the starting point at Ballykilmurry Bridge.
Iíve parked at the Mahon Falls car park twice without any problem, though there are stories of cars being broken in to unfortunately.
At the end of the circuit, there is a rough path down beside the Mahon Falls, on the east or the left hand side as you descend, crossing over the river at the base of the falls. A path brings you back the one km or so to the car park. Iíve ascended twice this way without any difficulty. Obviously it will be a little trickier in descent so an early start required to be there before dark!
