"A Reconstruction of a Ringfort" from CaptainVertigo Contract pics
Picture: A Reconstruction of a Ringfort (Contract pics)

Ignorantia Juris
The Irish Times report on the Ringfort Massacre stated: "At one point [the perpetrator] said he was unaware of the monument’s existence but this could not have been the case “because in November 2006, in a letter, he objected to a planning application by the then owner. And one of his grounds for objection was that ‘there was a historical ring fort on the lands’,” the judge said."
My wife was reared in the middle of a sprinkling of ringforts in Mayo. She and all her family treat ringforts with huge respect, as does the rest of the farming community. A person who would would wilfuuly damage a ringfort would be viewed as a pariah. As for justice, well the rural Irish people are perfectly sure that the little people who inhabit the other world will look after that.
PS Wicklore's Galway ringfort is a rare cashel, or stone fort. Most of the 45,000 ringforts extant in Ireland are earthen banks inside which the dwelling was located.

While not very challenging, recent felling means the views along the way and from the summit are pleasant enough. A nice spot for a lunchtime walk.
