County High Point and County Top
MountainViews uses the phrase 'County High Point' to refer to the highest piece of ground in a county. It takes the view that 'County Top' is a different thing that refers to the highest hill or mountain in a county. In all but two cases the County High Point and County Top are one and the same in Ireland's 32 Counties. The exceptions are counties Leitrim and Roscommon, whose highest pieces of ground are on the slopes of a hill instead of the top of a hill.

We all agree that the highest piece of ground in a county is its highest point. There is disagreement on whether this is called the High Point or County Top, or both. Some feel these phrases mean the same thing and don't distinguish between them. Others (like MV) feel they mean different things. Debates such as these show the depth of feeling and passion that people hold for our hills and mountains. It is this spirirt that I'm glad to see given a voice on MV, ensuring that all opinions are welcomed and listened to.
