Vulcano crater climb - Aeolian Islands
Vulcano is the Aeolian island closes to Sicily - about an hour by hydrofoil from the port of Milazzo on Sicily's NE coast. Vulcano is much lower than the highest volcano in the Aeolians, Stromboil, and there is a well marked route which climbs gradually up the side of the cone before hitting the crater rim at 400m (from where picture is taken). From there it's a steady trudge up the summit at 560m and then back down the same way - you can't do a full loop around the crater for safety reasons. Fabulous climb and the views from the top are awesome - but be warned this volcano stinks of hydrogen sulphide (rotten eggs) and you don't want to get too close to the umpteen fumaroles. It's about a 3 hour round trip on easy ground ,At the bottom of the mountain near the town of Vulcano there is a volcanic mud area where you can soak yourself in muck that's supposed to have all sorts of therapeutic properties and then hop into the sea to wash the muck off. If you do this don't wear your best swim gear - it's impossible to get the stink of H2S out of most fabrics so I just dumped my old swimmies. From there, hydrofoil to Lipari

A couple of pics from a frigid hike up Slievenamon that continued on to the NE top, Sheegouna.Amazing how even the most unremarkable hills are transformed by the white stuff.
