A slippery trip down Snake Gorge in Oman
Canyoning is a bit like caving but without the darkness or a roof over your head. In fact it's a cross between trekking, climbing and swimming. Being a caver I'm normally used to descending this sort of terrain along muddy passages and freezing water. So it was a delight to descend the Snake Gorge in Oman where the rock was clean and the water was warm.
Snake Gorge is a deep and narrow incised cut through limestone rock. The gorge is about 30m wide and over 100m deep in places (there is a Via Ferrata with Tyrolean traverses above the gorge). The route varies between a shingle wadi (river) bed, clean washed rock pools and boulder fields. There are several swims across deep pools and the occasional need to jump off a rock into a pool (or to use a rope). The highlight must be the cave towards the end of the route which is about 40m long and has stalactites on the roof.
The gorge is about 4-5km long and takes about 2-3 hrs to traverse. It should of course be avoided in unsettled weather as it can rapidly fill with a torrent of water and there is no escape.
I've uploaded a video of our trip to YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDgTZOuWVAE

There is enough space to park one car at 100 167, just on the edge of a wood around a sharp u-bend. Proceed north for 100m before turning NE up a gentle slope, although the terrain is treacherous ...
